Who would have thought that the solution to a locked situation was so close, literally around our waist? Using a belt to open a padlock. It’s truly remarkable how ordinary things can surprise us. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” and that fits perfectly with this story.
A video shows how someone opens a padlock using only a belt. This is not everyday fare. It demonstrates how creative people can be, especially when they really want to achieve something. In the video, a prisoner cleverly uses his belt to get the lock open. First, he threads the belt through the shackle of the lock. Then he fastens the buckle and pulls hard. And yes, the lock opens.
This trick with a belt shows us that we can often do more with the things we already have. We don’t always need to look for something new or special to solve a problem. Sometimes the solution is already within reach.
The story is also a lesson in clever thinking. We all encounter problems with locks from time to time. They can be big or small. But before we give up or ask someone else for help, we can first try to find a solution ourselves. Who knows, we might find a way we never thought possible.
What makes this even more interesting is what Alfred Charles Hobbs said nearly two hundred years ago about this: “Rogues knew a lot about lockpicking before locksmiths ever spoke of it… If a lock is not as impenetrable as has always been assumed, then it is certainly in the interest of honest people to know this fact, because dishonest people… will certainly apply the knowledge practically… the dissemination of knowledge is necessary to give fair play to those who might suffer from ignorance.”
These words from Hobbs strike at the heart of lockpicking. It’s not just about knowing how things work for our own safety. It’s also about being honest about what we know. This way, we can all be better prepared, both to protect ourselves and to solve problems. With a nice set of lockpicks, you learn more about the safety of you and your locks.
