With these tools, you pull the cylinder out of a lock, allowing you to operate the locking mechanism and open the door. In this overview, you will read everything about how core extraction works and what to consider when purchasing a cylinder extractor.

What is core extraction exactly?

Core extraction is a destructive opening method where the cylinder core is pulled out of the lock. The process occurs in three steps:

  1. A pull screw is screwed into the keyway of the cylinder
  2. The cylinder extractor grips the pull screw
  3. With leverage or pulling force, the core is pulled out of the housing

The result? The cylinder is destroyed, but the door opens. In emergencies, this is often the fastest method: an experienced professional can perform a core extraction in less than 30 seconds.

Two types of cylinder extractors

There are roughly two categories of cylinder extractors, each with its own application area.

Extractors with trapezoidal threads operate based on a screw principle. You turn a handwheel, causing the pull screw to be slowly but forcefully pulled outward. These extractors work very controlled and are suitable for almost all cylinder types, including round cylinders and oval cylinders.

Lever cylinder extractors use a chain system and leverage. You pump a lever, and the cylinder is pulled or broken out with brute force. This method is extremely fast and is mainly used for urgent jobs where every second counts.

Note: core extraction protection

Not every cylinder is vulnerable to core extraction. More and more modern cylinders have core extraction protection: a steel ring or special construction that prevents the core from being pulled out. SKG-certified cylinders with two or three stars have this protection as standard.

For secured cylinders, you need different techniques, such as drilling or using a breaking tube for protruding cylinders. A good locksmith always has multiple methods at their disposal.

Choosing the right pull screws

Without good pull screws, a cylinder extractor is worthless. The screw must bite firmly into the core without breaking during the pull. Quality screws with a special coating reduce friction, making them easier to screw in and less likely to break.

Pull screws come in various thicknesses for different cylinder types. In our category pull screws, you will find the right sizes for your work.

Buying a cylinder extractor: what to look for?

When purchasing a cylinder extractor, these are the main considerations:

  • Look for the right build quality. Hardened steel ensures durability with intensive use
  • What pull screws do you need? Does the extractor work with standard pull screws or only its own sizes?
  • Are pull screws, core extraction plates, and actuator keys included?

Combine with other opening techniques

A cylinder extractor is a powerful tool, but not always the best choice. For some locks, lockpicking is faster. Moreover, the lock remains intact, and you only need to have a new key made. Check out our lockpick sets as an addition to your toolbox.
