About Lockpickings

Hi, I’m Ties. I run Lockpickings. I started this because I wanted to open other people’s locks (just kidding, that’s not allowed and I don’t want to do that). It began because I wanted to understand how locks work. And it has been addictive.

Since 2011, I have been selling lockpick sets. At first for fun, later because I noticed that more people wanted to learn. In 2015, I started Lockpickings.nl. By now, we help thousands of people with their first lock, their twentieth lock, or that one stubborn thing that just won’t open.

Why I do this

I love precision. Puzzles. That moment when you feel a pin click into place. Lockpicking is not a trick. It is a skill. You learn to understand how mechanics work. How tension is created. How with patience and the right tools you can get through something that initially seemed impossible.

And yes, I test a lot of tools. I try out sets. I compare materials. I understand that not everyone is waiting for that, but someone has to do it. And I actually enjoy it.

 

Wim Vos: the man who started it all

Wim is the one who helped me further in lockpicking. He was a technician, locksmith, and as a teenager made his first lockpick set from old cutlery. Inspired by Eddie Wire’s “The Complete Guide To Lock Picking”. That man lived and breathed lockpicking.

Wim opened one of the first educational lockpick universities online. Later, he started a webshop that grew into one of the most well-known lockpick platforms in the Netherlands and Belgium. I have known him as a friend since 2007. Wim is no longer actively involved in the shop, but his passion for the craft is still present in everything we do.

What we do (and don’t do)

At Lockpickings, we sell lockpick sets, practice locks, and tools for people who want to learn lockpicking. We help beginners with their first set. We give advice on which pick fits which lock. And we write articles for people who really want to understand how it works, not just “turn here, push there”.

We stand for honest advice. If a cheap set is not good, we say so. If an expensive lock is overrated, we say that too. And if you have a question, you get an answer from someone who picks locks themselves.

Lockpicking is legal in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium, actually in all Western European countries. As long as you do it on locks that are yours or for which you have permission. It is a sport. A skill. And for many people, a relaxing challenge after a long workday.
