If a regular serrated cutaway already makes you sweat, you’ll want to know what happens when you add a grooved cylinder body. The Sparrows Serrated Core is a replaceable core you can insert into existing Sparrows training locks, taking raking to a whole new level.
Normally, serrated pins create one tricky moment: the shear line. They catch at precisely that one point, making them considerably harder than standard pins. But with this core, grooves run along the entire inner wall of the cylinder. This means a serrated pin doesn’t just bind at the shear line, but at multiple points simultaneously. The result? Your pins float, feedback becomes more diffuse, and identifying the binding pin suddenly becomes a lot more challenging.
You receive the serrated core itself, a five-pin key with grooved profile, and a six-pin key with grooved profile. All Sparrows cores are drilled for six pins by default, but are normally supplied as a five-pin version. The choice is yours.
The Serrated Core works with the Sparrows Cutaway, the Sparrows Progressive, and the Sparrows Sidewinder. You’ll need one of these training locks before you can use this core.
To swap the core, you need to slide the existing core out of the lock housing. This requires a plug follower – otherwise all pins will fall out of the cylinder the moment you remove the core. Don’t have one yet? You can use a Sparrows Front Loader, or an emergency solution with a wooden dowel of the same diameter.
This is not the first product you buy as a beginner. The Serrated Core is meant for people who have mastered standard training and are deliberately seeking more resistance. If you know how to work with serrated pins but want more challenge, this is the logical next step.
