Sparrows Comb 45

Sometimes the fastest way to open a lock isn’t picking at all. The Sparrows Comb 45 is one of those tools where after a few minutes of practice you understand why so many padlocks are actually far more vulnerable than you’d think.

Comb picking works differently from SPP or raking. You push the entire pin stack above the shear line: both the bottom pins and the top pins go up into the spring well of the lock. Once everything is above the shear line, you simply turn the comb pick like a key. Lock open.

Which Locks Does the Comb 45 Open?

The Comb 45 is specifically designed for 4- and 5-pin padlocks. That might sound limited, but the range of locks that falls into this category is large. If the bottom of a padlock reads “40mm” or “50mm”, there’s a good chance the Comb 45 will work.

Sparrows filed the teeth to also fit the Master 140, Master 150, Master 40mm, and Master 50mm. Even the ABUS 55/50 with 5 pins can be opened. These are locks you encounter everywhere, from bike racks to warehouse shelving.

How Do You Use the Comb 45?

You insert the teeth of the comb beneath the pins and lift vertically until the teeth press into the spring wells. Then align the comb with the core and turn. With some practice, this goes just as fast as using a key.
