10-Piece Padlock Shims

Shims can be used to pass the lock system of a padlock. With the shim, you get between the little pallet that clamps the bracket and the bracket. So it doesn’t matter if you have a number, plate or pin cylinder lock on your padlock because they can all be passed with the shim.

Fun Anecdote about the Shim Technique

After Tool was founded in 2001, a lot has happened in the lockpick world. Barry Wels had already received considerable attention from foreign media after his appearance at the US HOPE (Hackers on Planet Earth) conference. At the HOPE conference, Wels was handed a combination lock. Although Wels was unfamiliar with this particular padlock, he could see fairly immediately where the weaknesses of the lock lay.

Using a new technique, Wels was able to open the lock in less than two seconds. A deathly silence fell in the congress and everyone was surprised. The lock that secured students’ lockers in most schools in America was opened with a small piece of metal. This thin piece of metal with three ends is called a shim.
