How do I use a key extractor safely and effectively?

Removing a broken key from your lock is fortunately not very difficult. Whether it’s the door of your house or your car, the last thing you want is to spend hundreds of euros on a locksmith for locksmith tools that you can apply yourself. Here are some steps to safely and effectively remove your key with a key extractor.

1. Use a lock spray lubricant to flush the lock. Lock spray works best because it not only helps in removing the key more easily but also protects your lock from rust. If you don’t have that on hand, graphite powder can also help.
2. Make sure the cylinder is in the correct position, either fully locked or unlocked, before attempting to remove the broken key. If it is in an intermediate state, the key will remain stuck.
3. Use the handle part of the broken key to determine where the large groove along the side of the key is located. This is the ideal place to insert your extractor tool.
4. Choose the right extractor tool from your set. Start with a small hook if you have a standard key. These tools are designed to slide into the lock along the groove of the key and hook the teeth of the key so you can pull it out.

If you are using a spiral extractor, the same principles apply. It may be necessary to turn the tool a few times before pulling the key out. Experiment with different tools from your set until you find one that works well with your specific lock and broken key.

If the key comes partially out of the lock, use pliers to grab the visible part and carefully remove it. Be careful not to accidentally push the key back into the lock.
