Key duplication with a file – Key Impressioning explained

Do you want to duplicate a key without the original, for example, because you lost your key or have a broken key in the lock? This can be done using the technique of Key Impressioning. This technique is often used by professional locksmiths, enthusiastic lockpickers, and security experts. Below, we clearly explain how it works.

What do you need for key impressioning?

  • Blank keys
    – Make sure to have plenty of keys, as you will break many while practicing.
    – Use brass or soft metal (not too hard).
  • Good file
Recommended: Grobet Swiss cut #4 – a fine balance between sharpness and control.
    – Too fine files make the surface too smooth, too coarse files remove too much material.
  • Magnifying glass with lighting
    – To see the fine scratches or dents clearly.
  • Pliers or key holder
    – Use a key holder that is aligned with the key.
    – No angled pliers like a classic vice grip – they cause unnatural tension in your wrist and lead to fatigue or injuries.
  • Vise
    – To securely hold the lock or key, we recommend a suitable vise.
  • Optional: caliper
    – Handy for measuring the filed depths and comparing them with the official bitting depths (if known).

Not recommended:

  • Keys made of extremely hard metal
  • Too smooth files without texture
  • Poorly aligned pliers that strain your wrist

Step 1: Start with a blank key

Blanco sleutel voor impressioning

You start with an unprocessed, blank key that fits into the lock. By subtly turning the key, you will feel resistance from the so-called binding pins. These are pins that block the turning and leave clear markings behind.

Step 2: Reading the key

Gently move the key up and down while applying light pressure. This will create small impressions on the key. With good lighting and possibly a magnifying glass, you can see exactly where to file.

Step 3: File, test, and repeat

Use a good key file and remove a small amount of material from the marked spots. Start carefully; you can always remove more material later. Repeat the process: key in the lock, apply light pressure, move from top to bottom and turn, check again and re-file.

After a few attempts, you will have created a working key yourself, completely without the original. This makes Key Impressioning ideal when you need extra keys quickly or when other solutions like buying a cylinder lock are not desired.

When do you use Key Impressioning?

  • If you want to be able to copy all types of keys, even without the original.
  • In emergencies when you have lost your key.
  • In lockpicking competitions to test skills.

Do you prefer a quick solution without filing yourself? Then look for a professional locksmith. They will help you, and your key will be ready while you wait.

What makes this technique unique?

  • The lock indicates how the key should look.
  • No damage to your front door lock.
  • Applicable to almost all common locks, including locks for which you need a certified key.

Key copying with key maker set

Buy a quick key maker set from us to copy keys. Ideal when you need a spare key quickly or want to duplicate special keys that are usually difficult to make.

How does it work?

With a key copying set, you can quickly and easily make a perfect copy of your key. Below we clearly explain how to proceed.

Step 1: Preparation

First, prepare all the necessary items: the plastic casting mold, two components for the cast, talcum powder, melting container, the metal, and a burner.

Step 2: Make an impression of your key

Mix the two different components until a uniform mass is formed. Place this mixture in the casting mold and sprinkle the surfaces with talcum powder to prevent sticking. Carefully place your original key in the mold, close it, and tighten it securely with the included clamp ring. After about five minutes, the cast will be ready.

Step 3: Pouring the key

Melt a metal disc from the set in the melting container using the included burner. Ensure that the metal is well liquefied. Then carefully pour the molten metal into the mold and let it harden for a few minutes.

Step 4: Finishing your new key

Carefully open the mold and remove your new key. Check for excess edges and remove them with the included blade if necessary. Then test your new key directly in the lock.

Why choose this key maker set?

  • Fast and accurate duplication of keys.
  • Suitable for almost all types of keys, including certified keys.
  • Compact and easy to carry.
  • No post-processing needed.

With this set, you can easily make extra keys yourself. Ideal when you have lost your key or want to make extra keys without relying on a locksmith. Order the Quick-Key Easy Pro directly online from us.
