A lockpick gun, also known as snap gun or lockpick pistol, is a handy tool to quickly and effectively open various types of locks. In this article, we explain how this tool works based on the well-known laws of Newton.
The operation of a lockpick gun can be perfectly explained by the classical mechanics of Isaac Newton. Newton formulated three laws (laws of motion), and especially the third law of Newton plays a crucial role in the use of a lockpick gun.
The third law of Newton states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In other words, when object A exerts a force on object B, object B will push back with equal force. This principle, also known as action ↔ reaction, perfectly explains the operation of a lockpick gun.

When you use a manual lockpick gun or a lockpick gun manually, you pull the trigger to make the needle shoot up quickly. This causes the needles of the lockpick gun to collide with the pins inside the lock. Thanks to the action-reaction, the pins collide with the drivers in the lock, which then momentarily spring up. At that exact moment, you turn the lock open with a tension wrench.
In addition to the manual lockpick gun, there is also the semi-automatic lockpick gun. A well-known example of this is the Double Tap Snap Gun from Sparrows. The advantage of a semi-automatic lockpick gun is that it makes two quick strikes with one pull of the trigger. This increases your chances of opening locks.

According to the first law of Newton, an object will remain at rest until a force acts upon it. The second law of Newton also states that the greater the mass, the more force is needed to set it in motion. In lockpicking, this means that each pin requires a specific amount of force to move. Thanks to the quick action of a lockpick gun, all pins are quickly and sufficiently moved.
Lockpick guns can therefore work faster and easier than, for example, a lockpick set.
Choosing the right needles for a lockpick gun is crucial. Needles must be sturdy, thin, and precise to effectively engage the pins of the lock. Make sure you always have a selection of good needles on hand when using a lockpick gun.
By applying Newton’s three laws, you now understand why a lockpick gun works so effectively. The combination of speed, force, and timing, all according to the principles once discovered by Newton at Trinity College Cambridge, makes this tool indispensable for locksmiths and lockpick enthusiasts.
