These plastic door shim cards are the classic locksmith tool for latch shimming: opening a door that has closed on its spring latch, without a key and without damage. In the Netherlands they are known as flipperkaarten or mica cards.
It is the same principle as the well-known credit card trick, but a bank card is not made for it and soon bends or breaks. These shim cards are:
The card goes into the gap between the door and the frame, at the height of the latch. It presses on the angled side of the latch and pushes it back into the door, so the door can open. That is why it only works on a door that has closed on the latch, not on a door that has been locked.
A shim card will not open a door that has been locked with the key (a thrown deadbolt). It also does not work on latches with an anti-shim plunger (a deadlatch) or behind a latch guard plate.
Need extra stiffness? Take the Plastic Door Shim Cards 0.5 mm. Prefer stainless steel? Look at the Sparrows Flex Pass or the Multipick Latch Slider Set.
Only use bypass tools on doors and locks you own or have explicit permission to open.
