Locked out because a door closed behind you? With these door shim cards you can open a door that has closed on its spring latch, without forcing the lock and without damage. This technique is called latch shimming; in the Netherlands the cards are known as flipperkaarten. They are used by locksmiths, facility managers and DIY enthusiasts.
The latch is the angled bolt that clicks into the frame when the door closes. You slide the card into the gap between the door and the frame – not into the keyhole – at the height of the latch, usually at a slight angle. The card presses on the angled side of the latch and pushes it back into the door. On a stiff door you can use two cards together for extra strength.
A shim card will not open a door that has been locked with the key (a thrown deadbolt). It also does not work on latches with an anti-shim plunger (a deadlatch) or behind a latch guard plate.
Prefer a mix of thicknesses? Take the Plastic Door Shim Cards (5 pcs).
Only use bypass tools on doors and locks you own or have explicit permission to open.
