Lockpicking has become a fantastic sport where you achieve victory by grappling with the success of another. With the locksport, we aim to prove that a certain level of security has not yet been reached. When we then share this information with each other, we strive to create better security. In lockpicking, we attempt to unlock locks in an ethical manner, meaning, without destructive means or methods that can easily be abused.
A historical document from which we have learned a lot is the book Locks and Safes. The construction of locks (1853) by Alfred Charles Hobbs. Here, Hobbs writes:
If a lock is not as inviolable as it is supposedly supposed to be, it is important that an honest person knows about it first. An dishonest person will be the first to try to put the knowledge of the lock’s vulnerability into practice. The dissemination of this knowledge is necessary to inform those who trust these locks out of ignorance. It cannot be stated clearly enough that the acquisition of real facts is ultimately better for everyone.
Finally, here are the most important points about lockpicking:
1. It is impressive
Lockpicking not only gives you the feeling of being part of a secret service. You learn a lot about locks and can amaze many friends with your knowledge and skill.
2. It is inexpensive
Unlike other hobbies, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on lockpicking. You don’t need to sign up for expensive subscriptions to get started, saving you hundreds of euros.
3. It is educational
You learn more about the security measures applied worldwide. Experience where the weaknesses of locks lie and discover what makes a lock mechanism even stronger.
4. Never pick a lock without permission
The first principle should be very understandable. It is completely illegal to pick someone else’s lock without permission!
5. Never pick a lock that is in use
When lockpicking, there is always a chance that you may damage the lock. Damaging a lock can incur high costs.
Adhere to all these principles and keep lockpicking LEGAL
