There are various types of lockpicking rakes, each with its own application. Two of the most popular shapes are the City rake lockpick (also known as the L-rake) and the Wave rake lockpick. Additionally, the Bogota rake lockpick, which is often used for locks with difficult bitting (high pins), is a favorite among lockpickers.
The city rake lockpick is a versatile rake pick tool that can be used in various situations. You can use a city rake with a rocking motion or a scrubbing motion, depending on the type of lock and the depth of the pins. This technique allows for direct manipulation of all the pins and can quickly open the lock. This makes it an excellent choice for beginners.
The wave rake lockpick was originally developed by Christina Palmer and is ideal for locks with varying pin heights. Due to the wave shape of the wave rakes, the tool can better manipulate the pins, and by applying a scrubbing motion, all pins can be set to the correct height. This type of rake is often used for locks with complex bitting and can be supplied in a 20-piece lockpicking rake set.
The worm rake lockpick has a smaller profile shape that is ideal for locks with average bitting. The triple peak rake lockpick is often used for locks with more difficult bitting (high pins after low pins). As you can see in the image below, the triple peak rake is ideal for locks that are harder to open. It uses steeper angles but is therefore also limited to larger keyholes. The worm rake works perfectly for most locks with smaller keyholes. It still performs excellently on average profiled pin formations.
When you use a rake lockpick, you insert the tool into the keyway and move it back and forth over the pins. The goal is to get all the pins to their correct position so that the lock can turn and open. Using a lockpick rake set makes it easier to open different types of locks.
