Remove Broken Keys Quickly with the HPC EZ-1

A broken key stuck in a lock is frustrating, but with the right tool you can solve this problem within minutes. The HPC EZ-1 Saw Tooth Key Extractor is specifically designed to safely and effectively remove broken keys from cylinders without damaging the lock.

This professional extractor is used worldwide by locksmiths and is also excellent for hobbyists who want to tackle the problem themselves. The saw tooth technique differs fundamentally from spiral extractors and offers the best results especially with hard-to-reach key fragments.

Why the HPC EZ-1 Saw Tooth Extractor?

Professional Quality, Accessible Price

The EZ-1 combines professional performance with a competitive price. The stainless steel blade (0.56 mm thick) and brass handle ensure durability and a comfortable grip. Many locksmiths keep multiple units in stock – and that’s smart, because extractors can break with intensive use. With this affordable tool, you’re always prepared.

Unique Saw Tooth Technique for Difficult Situations

The HPC EZ-1 works differently than spiral extractors. Where a spiral extractor tries to grip in the grooves of the key, the saw tooth extractor uses the “shelf” at the top or bottom of the keyway. This makes it ideal for situations where you cannot get between the grooves without pushing the key further into the lock.

The technique is simple: you carefully slide the extractor over the top of the keyway (where the pins or wafers normally sit), gently move it back and forth while applying light pressure, and then pull out the broken piece. The saw teeth provide excellent grip on the key fragment.

Technical Specifications

  • Blade Material: Stainless steel
  • Handle Material: Brass
  • Blade Thickness: 0.022 inch (0.56 mm)
  • Type: Saw tooth extractor
  • Manufacturer: HPC (Hardware Products Company)
  • Part Number: EZ-1
  • Suitable for: Single-sided and double-sided keys
  • Application: Removal of broken key fragments from cylinders

How to Use the HPC EZ-1?

The saw tooth extractor works best when you slide it over the “shelf” of the keyway – that’s the flat surface at the top or bottom where there are normally no grooves in the key. With double-sided keys, you have such a shelf both top and bottom.

Step-by-step approach:

  1. Carefully slide the extractor over the top of the keyway
  2. Gently move it back and forth while applying light inward pressure
  3. Don’t push the extractor too far – you don’t want to push the key further into the lock
  4. Once you’re about halfway, push the extractor slightly downward at an angle for extra grip
  5. Gently pull while maintaining the angle – the saw teeth grip the key fragment

The difference from a spiral extractor is that you don’t try to get between the grooves, but rather use the smooth edge of the key. This prevents you from pushing the key further inward.

When to Choose a Saw Tooth Extractor?

The HPC EZ-1 is particularly suitable when:

  • The key sits deep in the lock and you cannot easily access the grooves
  • A spiral extractor doesn’t get sufficient grip
  • You want to minimize the risk of pushing the key further inward
  • You’re working with older locks where the grooves are difficult to access
  • You need a compact, lightweight tool for your toolkit

Why Do Professionals Have Multiple Units?

Experienced locksmiths always recommend keeping at least 2-3 HPC EZ-1 extractors in stock. The reason is simple: all key extractors are susceptible to breakage because they’re subjected to high mechanical stress during use. The material must be thin enough to fit in the lock, but strong enough to provide grip – a combination that makes breakage inevitable with intensive use.

With the competitive price of the EZ-1, it’s not a financial problem to purchase reserves. And trust us: the frustration level when your extractor breaks while you’re in the middle of a job and have no backup is many times higher than the investment in a few extra units.

Maintenance and Lifespan

The HPC EZ-1 requires minimal maintenance. The stainless steel blade is corrosion-resistant, but a bit of lubricating oil after use in dusty or humid environments extends its lifespan. Check the blade regularly for cracks or deformation – especially when you notice the grip is decreasing.

Store the extractor in a dry place, preferably in a tool case. This prevents damage to the fine saw tooth profile.
