Lockpicking radial locks (or Tubular locks) is very similar to lockpicking other pin cylinder locks. You have to put some tension on the core and at the same time manage to get the locking pins in the lock below the break line. The hardest part is finding the right tension wrench for this tension.
The Mantis is a tension wrench that is designed to put a rotating tension on the core of a radial lock.
With the right amount of tension, you can lockpick the pins in the tubular lock by pushing them clockwise one by one to below the breaking line.
Just like lockpicking for any other pin cylinder lock, you must respond to the feedback from the lock so that you can insert the pins to open the lock.
It is common for the design of a radial lock to require you to lockpick it two to three times before you can get it open.
Here’s a little tip in advance – if you have the lock locked, rotate it just a little bit.
Now take a business card, roll it up to the size of the lock, and then tape it. Now push the card into the keyhole of the lock you have licked. Then push hard enough to get an impression of the pins against the bottom of the card. With this impression, you can now make your own key to always use to open this lock.
The Mantis requires a little extra practice, but you will certainly learn.
With The Mantis, you can only set tension. You will still need a short hook or paper clip to place the pins.
